I have decided to start a blog to catalog these memories. If any of his descendants want to contribute that would be great. If not that is OK too. If nothing else I need a space to laugh, to cry, and to remember. By starting this while my dad is still alive he can enjoy the memories as well.
Below is the email that will go down as the saddest email I have ever received.
__________
Dear family -
This is a hard email to send but at this time it is easier than personal phone calls. Your dad has been feeling very tired lately and finally went to the Doctor. After a bunch of questions, lab work, imaging tests and several office visits we went to the Oncologist office yesterday. The Doctor said that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and has about 6 months to live. After discussing all of his options with the doctor, he has decided not to do chemo. The doctor said that chemo usually adds about 2 months but he would be sick a lot of the time. Your dad has decided he would rather feel as well as possible to enjoy the time that he has left. He says that he is ready for whatever the Lord want him to do and he has had a really good life. Fortunately, he is not in any pain, just very tired all the time. He jokes about it and says that he can do a project for 10 minutes as long as he can take a 10 minute rest. He is taking a lot of naps and the doctor said there is a good chance that one day he will just not wake up from a nap. He also said that the main tumor is located on the end of the pancreas (there are lots of other cancers on the liver) which allows a lot of room for tumor growth. Any other place on the pancreas would cause a lot of pain as the tumor grows. Any prayers for him would be greatly appreciated.
I am sorry to have done this over the email but I don't think I could have made all of the phone calls at this time.
Love - Roberta/Mom
