The Green Rabbit

When I got my driver's license the car that was designated the teenage car was a dark green VW Rabbit.  I had only had my license for about 2 months when I got into a car accident (it was my fault).   The damage to the Rabbit was on the passenger side front corner.  I don't remember what his reaction to the accident was.  If I had to guess he would have hit his forehead gently with one hand and said "dumb kids".  I don't recall there being a lecture or at least not a long one. Dad would have fixed the car himself but I had damaged the frame of the front corner so there was only so much Dad could do.  Elizabeth and I continued to drive around the damaged car.

Dad was always buying, fixing, and selling cars.  Months after the accident with the Rabbit Dad was selling one of the other cars we had around the house.   After test driving the car we had for sale a man asked Dad if he was willing to sell the Rabbit. They negotiated and price and the man drove off into the sunset with the Rabbit.

Elizabeth and I were not happy campers about this.  We were giving Dad a hard time about how dare he sell OUR (it really was his) car.  I can still see his reaction.  We were in the kitchen and he pulled up one leg of his pants (showing his super pale white legs - hahahah) and threw the leg into the table.  He said driving the car was as embarrassing as walking down the road with one of your pants legs pulled up - He was glad to be rid of the car.  Dad was often very understated in his reactions.  This was not an understated reaction.  We had no idea he had felt so strongly.  I don't know that we ever said anything negative again about him selling the Rabbit.
